Jack Goldberg (金杰)- Linguist

[ˈd͡ʒæk ˈgoldbɹ̩g] ([t͡ɕin55 t͡ɕiɛ35])

I am a second year PhD student studying phonology at The University of Southern California, advised by Canaan Breiss and Travis Major. My interests include both theoretical phonology and language documentation and preservation. I am currently working on four projects:

1- Investigation the relationship between articulatory setting and speech

2- Target based analysis of syllable contact alternations in Bashkir consonants

3- Vowel harmony and its relationship to lexical strata in Bashkir vowels

4- Documentation of Yilan Creole Japanese, in particular the Hanxi dialect

Linguistic Interests

Theoretical Phonology

In all of its forms. Of particular interest to me are loanword phonology, lexical strata, creoles, arial phenomena, and diachronic change. I plan to continue my research into these interrelated topics to gain a better understanding of why we see the synchronic grammars we do.

Field Work & Language Documentation

As a linguist I am in the unique position to engage in field research and assist communities in any way they desire in language preservation, revitalization, and documentation. During my undergraduate degree I engaged in fieldwork around the New York Metropolitan area in Yiddish, adding much needed modern data to our understanding of the language. In graduate school I am working with the Bashkir community in Los Angeles with Aygul Lyon. I have also been spending my summers in Yilan, Taiwan. There I work with the Yilan Creole Japanese community.

Phonetics-Phonology Interface

I believe the phonetic mechanisms underpinning much of the synchronic and diachronic grammar are underexplored. I am currently investigating how articulatory setting in a given language effects the phonetics and phonology in said language.

About Me

Drumming

I have been drumming for over a decade. In college I was in a band with three friends (Jason Oberstein, Doug Roth, Cole Makuch). We played shows around Saint Louis for our four years there and ultimately ended up making an album. Everything from the song writing, instrument playing, recording, mixing, and mastering was done in house by the four of us. The self-titled Album "Doug Addicts" can be found on all major streaming platforms and is linked below.

This picture is from an impromptu acoustic set we ran outdoors one day during covid.

Badminton

I started playing seriously while living in Taiwan. It is now my activity for working out as well as a great social sport. I'm always down for a game.

Eating and Traveling

I also love to eat and travel (who doesn't)! I have been lucky enough to see much of the world and hope to continue eating my way through the world one country at a time.

This picture is me eating a really good burger on the Lunar New Year in Hualien, Taiwan. Ends up the only restaurant that was open that night was an American one!
